BOWLING GREEN, Florida – The Marquette University men's golf team sits one stroke behind tournament-leader Butler after one round at the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship Presented by JEEP at the Streamsong Resort Blue Course in Bowling Green, Florida.
The Golden Eagles carded a 2-under-par 286 on Monday, led by All-American Hunter Eichhorn, who sits second individually with an opening round 4-under 68. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Leach is tied for sixth with a 1-under 71, while MU's three other individuals finished over par, paced by Nicolás Evangelio with a 1-over 73 in a tie for 12th.
"Our goal every tournament round is to compete until the last putt drops," Marquette head coach Steve Bailey said. "Overall it wasn't our best, but I was proud of the way they battled. We had a rocky stretch in the middle of the round (holes 7-10), but cleaned it up, playing the last last seven holes 3-under. We look forward to teeing it up again tomorrow."
Beginning his round with the tournament's final tee time, Eichhorn got off to a hot start with four birdies on his first six holes and made the turn with a 3-under 33 and a total of five birdies. He turned in a clean back nine with a lone birdie on the par-5 14th for his fifth sub-70 round of the year. His opening round 68 is the lowest he has turned in at the BIG EAST Championship, topping his first round 69 as a freshman in 2018.
Eichhorn is two strokes behind Butler's Michael Cascino, who is the individual leader at 6-under par (66), after an opening round that included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 second hole.
Leach offset two bogeys with three birdies on Monday to tie his lowest round of the year. He's finished par-or-better in three of the four rounds he has played in the BIG EAST Championship, dating back to his BIG EAST Freshman of the Year season in 2018-19.
Nine BIG EAST squads are competing this week for the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, after St. John's had to withdraw on Sunday due to COVID protocols.
Marquette is the reigning champion, having claimed the team title at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship at Callawassie Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The 2020 event was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Golden Eagles are looking to to claim their fifth BIG EAST title, after previously having won in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
