BOWLING GREEN, Florida – The Marquette University men's golf team sits two strokes behind tournament-leader UConn after two rounds at the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship Presented by JEEP at the Streamsong Resort Blue Course in Bowling Green, Florida.
The Golden Eagles at 3-over par (286-283--579) are two strokes behind UConn (292-285--577), which combined to shoot a 3-under 285 on Tuesday. Monday's leader, Butler, dropped two spots on Tuesday with a 13-over 301 and now sits third at 10-over, seven strokes behind Marquette.
Hunter Eichhorn (-5, 68-71-139) remains second individually after carding a 1-under 71 on Tuesday in a second round that included a quadruple bogey on the par-4 11th hole. Outside of his eight strokes on No. 11, Eichhorn turned in six birdies, including three over the final five holes to climb back to near the top of the leaderboard. The redshirt junior sits one stroke behind Butler's Michael Cascino, who is the individual leader at 6-under par (66-72--138), after Monday's first round that included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 second hole.
Eichhorn is in search of the second BIG EAST individual title of his career, having earned medalist honors as a freshman in 2018.
Redshirt sophomore Nicolás Evangelio jumped eight spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday with a 3-under 69 and now slots fourth individually at 2-under par (73-69--142). He began his day with birdies on the first two holes and added another pair on the back. His lone blemish was a bogey on the par-3 10th hole.
The Golden Eagles paced the field at the turn on Tuesday, as did Eichhorn, but dropped with struggles on 10 and 11. In total, MU's five golfers were a combined 14-over on holes 7-11 in the second round.
Marquette will tee off with UConn and Butler in Wednesday's final round beginning at 7:50 a.m. Central time on the first hole.
Nine BIG EAST squads are competing this week for the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, after St. John's had to withdraw on Sunday due to COVID protocols.
Marquette is the reigning champion, having claimed the team title at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship at Callawassie Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The 2020 event was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Golden Eagles are looking to to claim their fifth BIG EAST title, after previously having won in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
