Golden Eagles see championship match appearance streak snapped
The Marquette University men's tennis team (10-7) saw its 2021 campaign come to an end with a 4-2 loss to St. John's (16-1) in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep on Sunday afternoon in Cayce, S.C.
The Golden Eagles, who were seeded third in the field, saw their run of five-straight appearances in the championship match come to an end with the loss to the Red Storm (No. 2 seed). Marquette claimed the title in 2018.
The Red Storm opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions, and would move ahead 2-0 after a straight-set win at No. 6. Fran San Andres put Marquette on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, finishing the year 12-2 overall and 7-2 in dual action at the top spot.
After falling behind 3-1, Stefan Dragovic closed the gap with a three-set win at No. 3, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Unfortunately for MU, Tin Krstulovic was unable to force a third set at No. 4 and STJ was able to claim the deciding fourth point.
Had Krstulovic forced a third set, the match would have been decided at No. 4. Freshman Nikola Kijac was up 5-0 in the third set at No. 5 when play was suspended.
