KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tennessee āĀ Marquette University redshirt juniorĀ Hunter EichhornĀ shot a 5-over 76 in Monday's first round of theĀ Kingston Springs Regional of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at The Golf Club of Tennessee.
Eichhorn,Ā making his third appearance in an NCAA regional, is tied for 59th after posting five bogeys on Monday. The Carney, Michigan native began his round with consecutive bogeys on the par-4 second and third holes and closed out the front nine with a bogey on No. 7. Eichhorn shot holes 8-16 at even par before ending his day with bogeys on 17 and 18.
He will begin his second round at 9:31 a.m. Central time on Tuesday playing with Kritsarin Oukosavanna of Iona and Hunter Fry of USC Upstate.
Eichhorn, the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Year,Ā is the program's first at-large selection to NCAA regional play since former teammateĀ Matt MurlickĀ in 2018. He also joins M Club Hall of Famer Mike Van Sickle, who earned a pair of at-large bids to regionals - he was selected in 2007 and 2009 (he was a No. 1 seeded player that season).Ā
Reid Davenport of regional-hostĀ Vanderbilt leads the field with a 6-under 65, one stroke ahead of NC State's Maximilian Steinlechner. NC State and Kent State are tied for the team lead with identical 7-under 277 marks, while Vanderbilt and Houston each fired opening rounds of 5-under 279.
