Cowan and Woodward named to All-BIG EAST First Team
NEW YORK – Marquette University redshirt freshmen Devon Cowan and Mason Woodward were each named to the All-BIG EAST Conference First Team, while redshirt sophomore defenseman Zach Granger earned second team honors.
Woodward was one of two unanimous selections at close defense on the first team and Cowan was one of five attackmen recognized.
"We are excited that the hard work put in by Devon, Mason and Zach has been recognized by the BIG EAST," Marquette head coach Andrew Stimmel said. "All three are incredible ambassadors for our program and university. Mason and Zach have demonstrated their ability to cover some of the best offensive players in the nation, while Devon has joined an elite group of Marquette offensive players in eclipsing the 30-goal mark in a shortened season. While they are recognized individually, they will be the first to tell you their success does not happen without their teammates."
Woodward led all BIG EAST non-faceoff specialists with 54 ground balls this season and caused a league-high 18 turnovers. He was a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honoree during the regular season and was the top coverman for the Golden Eagles. The Towson, Maryland native ended his first full season of competition seventh in Marquette history in both ground balls (82) and caused turnovers (31).
Cowan turned in the top offensive season ever for a Marquette underclassman, posting 30 goals and 38 points while extending his goal-scoring streak to 17 games. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native posted five hat tricks during the 2021 campaign, including a career-high six goals against No. 10 Georgetown on April 10. His 30 goals tie him for fourth in program history on the single-season ledger, while his 38 points tie him for seventh all-time at MU.
Granger picked up 25 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers while starting all 12 games at close defense. Like Woodward, Granger was also used occasionally on the wing for faceoffs, and provided a strong combination with his close defense partner in front of the MU net.
The postseason honors are the first for each of the three individuals. Cowan and Woodward are the first MU underclassmen to earn recognition since 2018.
