Eichhorn named first team all-conference, while Evangelio is on the second team
NEW YORK -Â Marquette University redshirt junior Hunter Eichhorn was named BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Player of the Year for the second time in his career.
Â
Eichhorn, who also earned the distinction in 2018 during his BIG EAST Freshman of the Year campaign, was named to the all-conference first team, while newcomer Nicolás Evangelio earned second team recognition.
Eichhorn earned co-medalist honors at the 2021 BIG EAST Championship and has posted a total of three top-five finishes this spring. He earned an at-large berth into the 2021 NCAA Kingston Springs Regional, where he will be making his third appearance in an NCAA tournament event. The Carney, Michigan native also won a conference title as a freshman in 2018 and competed with the rest of his Marquette teammates in the NCAA Austin Regional in 2019.
He is Marquette's career scoring average leader at 71.55 strokes per round and has tied 2009 Byron Nelson Award winner Mike Van Sickle for the MU record with three NCAA appearances. Eichhorn is the first MU golfer to claim player of the year twice in the BIG EAST and 2020-21 marks the fifth time a MU golfer has been named the league's top player.
"I'm really proud of what he has accomplished," said Marquette head coach Steve Bailey. "Not the accolades, but his resiliency and determination throughout the process. Golf is a humbling game and the grit Hunter has shown over the past year makes these moments rewarding. I love his story. He's from a town of 200 people, never had a swing coach or a formal golf lesson. He's just a kid from the U.P., who loves to compete and does it his unique way."
Evangelio tied for 10th at his first BIG EAST Championship with a 3-over 219 at Streamsong Resort and was MU's second finisher at three of the last four events, including the Hootie Intercollegiate and The Calusa Cup. The native of Logroño, Spain was a two-time NAIA All-American during two seasons at Missouri Valley College and is a first time All-BIG EAST selection. He posted a 74.56 scoring average during his first season at Marquette.
"Nico has been a great addition to our program, adding consistency to our lineup and strengthening our culture," Bailey said.
