Class will be honored during conference play of basketball season
M Club Hall of Fame
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University has announced its seven newest inductees into the M Club Hall of Fame, including men's basketball player Dominic James, men's soccer players Charlie Lyon and Axel Sjöberg, women's soccer player Ally Miller, women's lacrosse player Elizabeth Goslee, men's lacrosse player Liam Byrnes and former men's basketball coach Tom Crean.
The six student-athletes all competed as members of the BIG EAST Conference and Crean oversaw the men's basketball program's rise from Conference USA to the NCAA Final Four and BIG EAST.
The date and time of the induction ceremony will be announced later this fall, with the intent of honoring the class during a home men's basketball conference game.
James (2005-09) compiled one of the best freshman seasons in MU men's basketball history, earning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors in 2005-06 and displaying a dynamic athleticism that quickly endeared him to Marquette fans. James played alongside fellow M Club Hall of Fame members Steven Novak and Jerel McNeal during that first year of BIG EAST play and was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and Associated Press All-American as a sophomore. He still ranks among MU's all-time leaders in points, assists, steals and wins.
Miller (2009-13) arrived on campus in the fall of 2009 and was part of one of the best four-year runs for any team on campus. The women's soccer program went 37-3-3 in BIG EAST action during her tenure, won four BIG EAST American Division titles and captured the squad's first BIG EAST tournament crown in 2012. During her senior campaign in 2012, Miller became only the third player in program history to earn NSCAA All-America Second Team honors, while also earning recognition as a CoSIDA Capital One First Team Academic All-American. She remains the only women's soccer player to achieve both honors.
Lyon (2010-14) and Sjöberg (2011-14) were contemporaries of Miller and led the men's soccer team to previously unachieved heights. In 2012, the Golden Eagles made their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1997 while winning a program-record 16 matches. They followed that up in 2013 with another NCAA appearance and the program's first BIG EAST tournament title, while Lyon was named to the all-tournament team and Sjoberg earned most outstanding defensive player honors.
The towering 6-foot-7 Swede, Sjöberg was a two-time first team all-conference selection and the first MU player selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft. Lyon, also an MLS draftee, remains Marquette's all-time leader in shutouts and goals against average and was Marquette's McCahill Award winner in 2015. Both players also excelled in the classroom, claiming numerous academic all-conference and all-district accolades. Lyon was also a two-time CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
Byrnes (2012-16) and Goslee (2013-16) were both stalwarts of the first four seasons of varsity lacrosse at Marquette.
Byrnes pushed the men's lacrosse program to national prominence in his redshirt senior season as the Golden Eagles won the BIG EAST Championship over No. 1 Denver in 2016 and earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament with a first round home game at Valley Fields. Byrnes was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year that season on his way to USILA Second Team All-America honors and is the only player in program history with over 200 ground balls and 100 caused turnovers. He has become one of the best men's lacrosse players in the world, earning MLL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 and is a finalist for similar honors in the PLL this season.
Goslee was a three-time All-BIG EAST selection during her career on the women's lacrosse team and was selected to the U.S. Women's National Team on defense in 2014-15. The three-time team captain returned following her playing tenure and served as an assistant coach for three seasons from 2017-19.
Crean (1999-2008) arrived at Marquette in the summer of 1999 and set to work rebuilding a proud men's basketball tradition. During nine seasons, Crean compiled an overall record of 190-96, led MU to the 2003 NCAA Final Four – its first since 1977 – and four other NCAA tournament appearances. Crean earned Conference USA Coach of the Year in both 2001-02 and 2002-03 before leading Marquette's successful integration into a loaded BIG EAST in 2005-06. Also inducted to the M Club Hall of Fame as part of the 2003 Final Four Team, Crean recruited and coached All-Americans Dwyane Wade, Travis Diener, Dominic James, Jerel McNeal and Lazar Hayward.
