Golden Eagles earn dominant victory over Hoyas behind McLaughlin's seven triples
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (11-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) posted a dominant win over Georgetown (6-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) Friday night at the Al McGuire Center, 68-32.
In a game which Marquette struck first and never trailed, graduate guard Karissa McLaughlin came out firing for 18 points on six 3-pointers in the first half. She finished the game with 21 total points and seven triples, one shy of typing the program's single-game record.Â
"Overall I'm thrilled with our defensive effort tonight," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "With the quick turnaround of three games in five days you've got to be mentally engaged for a quick scout and be able to execute on the fly, so I thought our defense was the best part of tonight."Â
The Marquette defense held Georgetown to 23.1 percent (12-of-52) shooting from the field, and forced 20 Hoya turnovers. Additionally, Marquette won the rebounding battle 51-33, including 20 offensive boards.Â
The Golden Eagles closed out the first half on a 17-2 run over the final 6:53 of the second quarter to take a 25-point lead into the break. Georgetown's four second-quarter points were the fewest by a MU opponent this season.
