Men and women place 25th at Great Lakes Regional
TERRE HAUTE, Indiana –The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams placed 25th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Indiana State.
The women's 6k race kicked off action at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course Friday morning. Competing in her first regional, Anna Penzkover led the Golden Eagles around the course in a time of 22:24.9 to take 114th place. Penzkover has finished first for the Golden Eagles in the last three meets she has competed in.
Laurel Moneysmith (127th) finished second for the Golden Eagles with her second-fastest time of the season at 22:35.1. Captain Emily Noone (148th) turned in her second-best time of the season crossing the line in a time of 22:55.5. Junior Kate Jochims followed taking 153rd overall with a time of 23:08.6.
Sophomore Audrey Grimm rounded out MU's top five scorers in her first regional finishing in a time of 23:59. Grimm placed 184th overall in the race.
On the men's side, David Zeller, Tyler Re, Thomas Leonard, Sean Kellogg and Keagan Morgan all saw their first action at the 10k distance. Zeller paced the men with a time of 31:41.3 to place 75th overall.
Last year's top regional finisher, Dan Weizeorick (100th) was the second Golden Eagle to finish with a time of 32:10.5. Re finished his first regional in a time of 32:58.2 and placed 136th overall. Thomas Leonard (33:27.1) and Sean Kellogg (33:57.1) completed the men's top five scorers taking 148th and 165th, respectively. Weizeorick, Re and Leonard have now all finished in MU's top five in every meet they have run in this season.
Notre Dame and Ohio State earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships on the women's side, and Wisconsin and Notre Dame earned bids on the men's side.
