Golden Eagles have now won 26 of past 29 meetings with Panthers
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women's basketball team (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) picked up another win to remain perfect on the season Sunday afternoon, taking down cross-town foe Milwaukee 73-47 at the Al McGuire Center.
"This was a great victory over Milwaukee, it's always an extremely tough matchup when you're just down the street from one another," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "I thought our improvement from Friday night to Sunday was what I was the most proud of. We weren't happy with how our defense was against Holy Cross and we had a quick turnaround to make some improvements."
The Golden Eagles used stellar defense to pull out to an early lead and never looked back, never trailing after the first minute of the contest. They held the Panthers to just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) shooting in the first half, taking a 41-22 advantage into the break.
Along with stifling defense, MU also used a dominant performance on the glass to secure the win. The Golden Eagles brought down 58 rebounds while allowing just 26 to the Panthers. They turned 24 offensive boards into 20 second chance points.
Senior forward Chloe Marotta posted one of the top statistical games of her career, recording a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists and recording a steal and a block. For the third time in as many games, junior guard Liza Karlen also finished in double-figures, going for 13 points.
While the third and fourth quarters were played more closely than the first two, Marquette remained in control as all 12 of the team's players saw action while nine got on the scoreboard.
Marquette finished the game shooting a season-best 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from 3-point range, led by three triples by senior guard Claire Kaifes, who went 3-for-3 from deep on the afternoon.
