Golden Eagles to compete in one of the nation's premiere tournaments
The Marquette women's basketball team (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) hits the road for the first time during its 2022-23 campaign this weekend as it travels to the Bahamas to compete in the Battle 4 Atlantis. In what has become one of the nation's top women's basketball tournaments, the Battle 4 Atlantis boasts an incredibly strong field including six teams that are in or are receiving votes in the most recent AP Top 25 poll, and three teams in the top 15.
Marquette's first game in the tournament will be against No. 3 Texas, who is fresh off an Elite 8 appearance a season ago. This will be the third all-time meeting between the Golden Eagles and the Longhorns, with the series sitting at 1-1. Most recently, the teams faced off in 2011, an 68-65 Marquette win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Dependent on the result of the Texas game, Marquette will then face one of either No. 6 Louisville or RV Gonzaga. Other teams in the field include No. 11 Tennessee, RV South Dakota State, RV UCLA and Rutgers. Each team is guaranteed three games in the bracket-style tournament.
The Golden Eagles are off to a 3-0 start to the year after opening the campaign with home wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross and Milwaukee. In its most recent outing, MU took down cross-town foe Milwaukee 73-47 on Sunday, Nov. 13, led by a dominant 19-point, 16-rebound, six-assist performance from senior forward Chloe Marotta.
All games in the Bahamas will be streamed on FloHoops, except for the championship game and third-place game, which will be televised on ESPN and ESPNU, respectively. Jill Painter Lopez, Isis Young and Dani Wexelman will be on the call for FloHoops.
ABOUT THE BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS
• One of the nation's premiere college basketball tournaments since 2010, the Battle 4 Atlantis added a women's tournament in 2021, with eventual national champion South Carolina winning the inaugural event.
• Marquette was slated to take place in what would have been the tournament's first year in 2020, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• In a bracket-style tournament, each team involved is guaranteed three games.
• All games take place at the Atlantis resort's Imperial Arena.
• All games will be streamed on FloHoops, outside of the championship game and the third-place game, which will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPNU, respectively.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
• This year's Battle 4 Atlantis field features three of the top-15 teams in the nation, and six teams who were in or receiving votes in the most recent AP Top 25.
• Marquette's only guaranteed opponent, Texas, is currently ranked No. 3 after an Elite Eight appearance a season ago. The Longhorns are 1-1 this season, and fell to No. 5 UConn on Monday, Nov. 14.
• Marquette will then face either #6 Louisville or RV Gonzaga on Sunday. Other teams in the field include #11 Tennessee, RV South Dakota State, RV UCLA and Rutgers.

LAST TIME OUT
• Marquette improved to 3-0 on the season as it posted a 73-57 win over cross-town foe Milwaukee Sunday afternoon inside the Al McGuire Center.
• The Golden Eagles used stellar defense to pull out to an early lead and never looked back, never trailing after the first minute of the contest.
• Along with stifling defense, MU also used a dominant performance on the glass to secure the win. The Golden Eagles brought down 58 rebounds while allowing just 26 to the Panthers. They turned 24 offensive boards into 20 second chance points.
• Senior forward Chloe Marotta had one of the top statistical games of her career, recording a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists and recording a steal and a block.
• For the third time in as many games, Liza Karlen also finished in double-figures, going for 13 points.
A SPARK OFF THE BENCH
• One of Marquette's strengths early on this season has been its depth, and using its bench to provide production when needed.
• MU has already used three different starting lineups in three games, matching as many as it used all of last season.
• On average this season, the Golden Eagle bench has been responsible for 22.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per outing. All 12 eligible players on the roster have played in all three games.
WHAT'S ON TAP?
• The Golden Eagles return home to Milwaukee for its next game, facing Saint Francis on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. inside of the Al McGuire Center.
