King, Marotta each earn all-Tournament honors
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — The Marquette women's basketball team (5-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) suffered its first setback of the season in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game Monday afternoon, falling to #20 UCLA 66-58 in overtime.
The senior duo of Chloe Marotta and Jordan King were each named to the Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament Team following the contest. Marotta averaged 13.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in the tournament, while King went for 16.0 points, 3.7 boards and 2.3 assists per outing.
"I'm just really proud of our program for the performance we had this week," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "There's no better way to start the day than with the final going to overtime. I thought our toughness and grittiness is good, but give UCLA a lot of credit. Down the stretch, they made tremendous plays and we just came up a little bit short."
The game began as a defensive battle as both sides got off to a slow offensive start, combining to shoot just 29.6 percent (8-of-27) with 11 combined turnovers through the first 10 minutes. While the offenses found a bit more rhythm in the second quarter, things remained even going into the break, the game tied up at 27 apiece.
The majority of regulation was played within two possessions, neither team leading by more than seven at any point. The fourth quarter began the same way as the third, with a tie ballgame.
With 15.7 seconds remaining in the game and a two-point Marquette deficit, Chloe Marotta caught a UCLA defender in the air with a pump-fake outside the arc, then drove to the basket for a right-handed scoop shot to even things up. Following a Bruin timeout, the Golden Eagles forced three-straight misses to send the game into overtime.
With 4:19 left in the overtime period, Jordan King picked up her fifth foul and was sent to the bench, leaving the Golden Eagles without their starting point guard the rest of the way. In King's absence, freshman guard Mackenzie Hare stepped up to the plate. She scored five points in overtime, but MU was unable to close the gap.
The Bruins were paced by Kiki Rice, who finished the game with 18 points.
