Golden Eagles use strong second half, career scoring performance by King to secure the win
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (8-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) opened a four-game homestand with a victory Saturday afternoon, posting a 77-53 win over Loyola Chicago inside of the Al McGuire Center.
"We had a great effort overall in the second half, our third and fourth quarters were very strong," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "We had a tough few moments in the first and second quarters, but I thought the players were incredible at responding after halftime. We really imposed our will and put some pressure on Loyola."
Marquette rode the hot hand of Jordan King to a victory, as the senior guard went off for a career-high 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting from the floor in the contest. This was the second-straight game where a MU player scored a career-high 30 points, following senior forward Chloe Marotta's performance last Sunday at Seton Hall.
The Golden Eagles started the afternoon on a strong note, getting off to a 9-0 run out of the gates but the Ramblers responded as guard Maya Chandler went for 16 points in the first half to cut the MU lead to just three after a 6-0 run to close out the second quarter.
The second half started similar to the first, this time with a 10-0 MU run out of the locker room to trigger a Loyola Chicago timeout. It was all Golden Eagles the rest of the way, as they used a 24-11 third quarter and a 22-14 fourth quarter to gain separation en route to a 24-point victory.
King wasn't the only Golden Eagle with a career scoring high, as freshman Emily La Chapell finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting to double her previous career high. Junior forward Liza Karlen chipped in a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards.
MU once again took care of business on the glass, outrebounding the Ramblers 40-24, while also posting a 58-28 advantage in points in the paint.
Loyola Chicago (3-8, 0-0 A-10) was paced by Maya Chandler, who finished the game with 20 points.
