MILWAUKEE – Head coach Andrew Stimmel has announced the 2023 regular season schedule for the Marquette University men's lacrosse team.
The Golden Eagles begin the regular season on Feb. 4 with a game against Lindenwood at Valley Fields and cap the year with the 2023 BIG EAST Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship in Milwaukee on May 4-6. In total, Marquette plays six regular season contests along with two scrimmages and three BIG EAST tournament matchups at Valley Fields.
The league tournament will be held in Milwaukee for the first time this spring as the 2016 and 2017 BIG EAST tournament champions look to defend their home turf.
The regular season opener against Lindenwood is the first NCAA Division I game for the Lions, who made the jump from Division II this academic year. First faceoff is slated for 11 a.m. Central time at Valley Fields.
Following the regular season opener, MU hits the road for a season-long four-game road swing beginning on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Utah. MU fell to the Utes, 12-11, last season in Milwaukee and its only previous trip to Salt Lake City was a preseason scrimmage in 2019.
From there, MU heads to Notre Dame for a midweek matchup with the Fighting Irish on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The Golden Eagles close the month of February with a Saturday, Feb. 25 matchup with Michigan at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples Florida. MU will meet the Wolverines at 2 p.m. CT as the first game in a double-header also featuring Ohio State and Virginia.
Marquette plays at Detroit Mercy on March 4 before returning home to welcome Bellarmine on March 11 for its first home contest in over a month.
The Golden Eagles then head to Long Island for another neutral site matchup with a Big Ten school, this time facing Penn State on Saturday, March 18 at General Douglas A. MacArthur High School in Levittown, New York. MU's previously played Duke at Ward Melville High School in Setauket, New York during the 2019 regular season.
Marquette hosts St. Bonaventure on March 25 before beginning BIG EAST play on Saturday, April 1 at Providence. The Golden Eagles then host St. John's on April 8 before another mid-week matchup on Tuesday, April 11 at Cornell. In total, MU will face four opponents – Lindenwood, Penn State, St. Bonaventure and Cornell – for the first time in program history.
Marquette closes out regular season play against three BIG EAST rivals Georgetown (April 15), Villanova (April 22) and Denver (Friday, April 28). The two contests against the Hoyas and Pioneers are slated for Valley Fields, while MU will head to Pennsylvania to take on the Wildcats.
The Golden Eagles return all 10 starters and a deep face-off unit from a team that fell at No. 2 Georgetown in the BIG EAST semifinals last year.
