Golden Eagles' strong offensive effort not enough to keep up with Wildcats
EVANSTON, Ill. -Â Marquette University women's lacrosse fell to No. 5 Northwestern, 24-13, at Ryan Fieldhouse on Monday night in its first road contest of the 2022 season.
Hannah Greving posted a hat trick to lead Marquette (1-1, 0-0 BIG EAST), while junior attacker Mary Schumar totaled a career-high six points on two goals and four assists.
Freshman Meg Bireley notched her first two collegiate goals in the contest, and Ellie Henry netted the second goal of her NCAA career.Â
Kyra LaMotte and Shea Garcia each added two tallies for Marquette, and Lydia Foust also contributed a goal.
MU's offensive output of 13 goals was the most Marquette has ever recorded against a Top 10 opponent, and the second-best performance against a Top 25 foe.
Amanda Rumsey made five saves for the Golden Eagles, while freshman netminder Brynna Nixon stopped two shots in her collegiate debut.
It was the seventh all-time meeting between the programs, with the Wildcats now owning a 7-0 record in the series.
After tying the game at 1-1 with a Greving goal, MU's deficit rose to three in the first quarter before Garcia ended the drought to tighten the score. But Northwestern outscored the Golden Eagles 4-1 in the remainder of the opening frame and led 8-3 at the quarter break.
It was an even second quarter, as each squad netted four tallies to maintain a five-goal difference at the intermission.
The Wildcats again dominated in the third stanza, putting up eight goals compared to MU's three.
Marquette totaled the first two tallies of the final period, but NU contributed four more goals to secure the victory.
Northwestern (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) was led by a nine-point day from Leah Holmes, while Erin Coykendall and Lauren Gilbert each totaled eight points on 11 combined goals. Madison Doucette made six saves in the cage for the Wildcats.
