Buckeyes use late surge to pull away after three tightly-contested quarters
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (1-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) dropped a road battle to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon, falling 18-11 at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Despite playing three tightly-contested quarters, the unbeaten Buckeyes (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) used a late surge to come out on top.
After falling behind by a pair of goals early, the Golden Eagles responded to a 2-0 deficit by scoring four goals in rapid succession. It took just over five minutes for MU to capture a two-score lead of its own midway through the first quarter.Â
Following a 6-5 shootout in the first quarter in which senior attacker Shea Garcia posted a first-quarter hat trick in just 11:38 of action, each team scored a pair of goals in the second as MU took an 8-7 lead into the break.
OSU regained its footing in the third quarter, scoring with 3:15 left to take its first lead since early in the contest, and then continuing to string together nine-straight goals. Junior attacker Mary Schumar snapped the scoring skid with her first goal of the game, before a Buckeye goal with :03 remaining finished things off.
While being out-shot 40-27 in the contest, Marquette's Amanda Rumsey recorded 11 saves in the net.Â
Garcia finished the afternoon with four goals and an assist while taking a career-high nine shots. Junior midfielder Emma Soccodato filled the stat sheet as well, recording two goals on six shots, as well as a caused turnover and a game-high seven draw controls.
The Buckeyes were led by Jamie Lasda, who finished with three goals and two assists. Three different Ohio State players recorded hat tricks in the contest.Â
