Golden Eagles picked to finish fifth in preseason poll
NEW YORK – The BIG EAST women's lacrosse preseason coaches' poll was announced on Thursday with the 2021 conference champion Denver picked as the unanimous favorite to repeat with the crown in 2022. The pioneers earned all five available first-place votes and a total of 25 points to sit atop the poll. UConn graduate midfielder Sydney Watson was voted BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Sydney Frank, a senior defender for Villanova, was elected BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Preseason poll and awards are decided by a vote of the league's head coaches who are not permitted to vote for their own team.
Denver was followed in the preseason poll by Georgetown, which collected 21 points and the remaining first-place vote. Georgetown landed third with 17 points, while Villanova was slotted fourth with 13 points. Marquette was tabbed fifth in the poll with nine points, while Butler rounded out the list in sixth with five points.
Led by 10th-year head coach Meredith Black, the Golden Eagles had one player named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Lydia Foust, a senior midfielder, made her way onto the list after a 2021 campaign which saw her named First Team All-BIG EAST. The Redwood City, California, native totaled 28 goals a season ago, the most of any returning Marquette player, along with six assists and 34 points. She started every contest for the Golden Eagles, and was the recipient of the team's 'Hustle' Award.Â
The top four teams in the standings qualify for the 2022 BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championship presented by JEEP. Denver will serve as host of this year's conference tournament, which is slated for May 5 and 7 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
