Short Series Has Plenty Of Highlights
Marquette has faced UConn on just 12 occasions all-time, but the limited series has already provided a number of memories.
The all-time series dates back to the program's first year in the BIG EAST in 2005-06. MU hosted the Huskies at the Bradley Center on Jan. 3, 2006 in the team's first home game as a member of the BIG EAST Conference. Steve Novak finished with 41 points and 16 rebounds and Jerel McNeal chipped in 19 points and 12 boards in a 94-79 Marquette victory over No. 2 UConn to hand the Huskies their first loss of the season.
Other series highlights include a game-winning shot by Jimmy Butler with three seconds left in a 70-68 win on the road on Jan. 30, 2010 and an overtime win by Marquette at home on Jan. 1, 2013 when Junior Cadougan forced the extra session on at 3-pointer as time expired in regulation.
At least one of the teams has been nationally ranked in 7-of-12 outings. The Huskies held off MU for a 78-70 win in the league home opener for the Golden Eagles on Dec. 21. Forward Justin Lewis led the way with 20 points and forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper added 13 points in the first outing. Guard Darryl Morsell missed the game due to health & safety protocols.
Marquette Completes Rare Sweep Of Wildcats
Marquette's 83-73 victory over Villanova on Feb. 2 completed a season sweep of the Wildcats in the home-and-home series, marking the first time since the 2011-12 campaign the Golden Eagles were able to claim both outings.
Since the league re-organized in 2013-14, only Creighton (2013-14) and Butler (2016-17) had managed to claim both regular-season matchups against Villanova. Marquette is the first team to hold the Wildcats under 40 percent shooting in each game since Providence did so in 2003-04.
Marquette has now held five-straight BIG EAST opponents under 40 percent shooting for the first time since joining the league in 2005-06.
Marquette Continues Rankings Climb
Marquette's recent run of eight victories in the last nine outings has vaulted the team into the top-25 rankings and after the win over No. 12 Villanova last week, Marquette is currently 18th in the latest Associated Press Poll and 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
MU is ranked in both polls for the second-straight week and possession of the 18th position marks the team's highest since Feb. 10, 2020. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll and are currently in fourth place.
The BIG EAST is tied with the Big Ten for most teams currently in the top-25.
