San Andres, Dragovic claim singles wins
The Marquette University men's tennis team (7-16) saw its 2021-22 campaign come to an end with a 4-2 loss against Xavier (12-8) Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship in Cayce, S.C.
XU was the No. 3 seed in the eight-team field at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center and Marquette was seeded sixth. The Golden Eagles and Musketeers recently met in Milwaukee on April 16, with MU earning a 4-3 victory.Â
Friday's result marked the final competition for seniors Fran San Andres and Shaddy Khalafallah.
Xavier opened the match by narrowly clinching the doubles point. After Stefan Dragovic and Ian Brady cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 and the Musketeers earned a victory at No. 3, a late rally by Rami Scheetz and San Andres came up just short, 7-6, at No. 1.
Marquette received straight-set wins by San Andres and Dragovic at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, but were unable to keep Xavier from advancing. Dragovic concluded the year 17-6 in dual competition, including an 11-3 mark at No. 2.
