
Volleyball announces 2022 schedule

The Golden Eagles have 10-straight home matches from early September into October

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University women's volleyball has announced its 2022 schedule, featuring matchups against five NCAA tournament teams from last season.

While in Kentucky on Aug. 27, MU takes on the Ohio Bobcats, the former program of MU head coach Ryan Theis. Marquette assistants Abby Gilleland and Ryan Walthall were also at Ohio alongside Theis, and Gilleland remains one of the best players in OU history.

Following the opening road trip, Marquette returns to the Wisconsin, but heads to Madison to take on reigning national champion Wisconsin on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles round out the trip west on I-94 with a Sunday contest against High Point.

After the weekend in the state capital, MU returns to the Al McGuire Center for a 10-match homestand. The Golden Eagles begin by hosting Loyola Chicago on Tuesday, Sept. 6 before weekend bouts against LSU and Milwaukee.

Next on the docket is a Tuesday contest against Green Bay, before hosting Illinois and Illinois State on Sept. 17 and 18 to finish the non-conference slate. Both teams from the Prairie State competed in the NCAA tournament last year, with the Illini advancing to the third round.

BIG EAST play begins the following Wednesday when DePaul travels to Milwaukee for the conference lidlifter. DePaul made its first appearance in the BIG EAST tournament last season, ending a historic season with a 19-12 record. Butler makes a visit to the Al on Saturday, Sept. 24 to round out the first week of conference action.

The Golden Eagles then host UConn on Friday, Sept. 30. Connecticut played in last year's BIG EAST semifinals, falling to Marquette in the semifinals. The Huskies advanced to the NIVC semifinals in 2021 with Gilleland serving as an assistant coach. Peter Netisingha, MU's volunteer assistant in 2021, is now a full-time assistant coach with the Huskies.

MU starts October with one more game on its home floor, playing host to the Providence Friars at 6 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The first road trip of Marquette's BIG EAST schedule comes the following weekend, including contests at St. John's on Friday and Seton Hall on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles then head to Omaha, Nebraska, for a game against Creighton. MU finishes the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 16 against Xavier.

Marquette returns home for games against Seton Hall and St. John's on Oct. 21 and 22 at the Al McGuire Center. The week after includes trips to DePaul for a Wednesday contest followed by the second matchup of the year against Butler.

November begins with Georgetown and Villanova traveling to Milwaukee. MU then heads on the road again to face Providence and UConn the next weekend.Â

The final regular season matches come at the Al McGuire Center, as Marquette hosts Xavier on Friday and the Creighton Bluejays come to town for the conference finale at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19.Â
