Woodward is only the second two-time All-America in Marquette history
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - For the second time in as many years, Marquette University defenseman Mason Woodward has garnered honorable mention All-America recognition by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, it was announced on Thursday afternoon.
"Mason continues to show that he is one of the best defensemen in the country and we believe he is only getting better," Marquette head coach Andrew Stimmel said. "To be voted All-American in a year where he missed four games due to injury tells you everything you need to know about Mason's ability, competitiveness and work ethic. He is a tremendous leader and will continue to set the bar for our program moving forward."
Woodward picked up 60 ground balls and caused 19 turnovers in 12 games on his way to becoming just the second two-time USILA All-American in Marquette history (Ryan McNamara in 2016 and 2017)was the other). The Towson, Maryland native ended his redshirt sophomore season third in Marquette history in caused turnovers (50) and is fifth in ground balls (142). He is first in program history in ground balls per game (4.58) and second in caused turnovers (1.61).
Even though he played just three conference games in 2022, Woodward led all BIG EAST defensive players with 17 ground balls in league action. Woodward missed a portion of the season with a broken hand but earned all-conference accolades for the second time. He was a two-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honoree during the regular season and was the top coverman for the Golden Eagles.
