Cowan, Williams and Woodward join O'Grady as All-BIG EAST
NEW YORK - Marquette University attackman Bobby O'Grady is the BIG EAST Conference Men's Lacrosse Freshman of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Fellow attackman Devon Cowan, defenseman Mason Woodward and faceoff specialist Luke Williams were honored on the All-BIG EAST Second Team, while O'Grady was a first team selection.
O'Grady was a unanimous choice for the league's top rookie award after setting new Marquette single season (44) and single game (8) records for goals scored this season. He is the first Golden Eagle to earn the honor and the first MU freshman ever named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. The native of Milton, Massachusetts scored 22 goals and added a pair of assists in BIG EAST play, while shooting a scorching 46.8 percent with eight man-up goals. The left-hander posted a total of 49 points in 14 games and set a new program record with 13 goals with the man advantage.
O'Grady's goal scoring prowess launched him up MU's single season and career scoring charts and allowed him to pass all-time scoring leader Ryan McNamara with his fifth goal at No. 2 Georgetown on April 16. O'Grady's 44 goals is already the ninth-highest career mark in MU history and he is one goal from moving up to the No. 8 spot. He's also one point from becoming the 16th MU player to reach 50 career points and only the fourth to ever do so in a single season (McNamara (57 in 2016), Jordan Greenfield (52 in 2015), Tyler Melnyk (51 in 2014)).
Cowan and Woodward each missed significant portions of the season but earned all-conference accolades for the second time in their careers. Cowan posted 20 goals and eight assists in 10 games, while Woodward picked up 54 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers in 11 games, including 10 starts. Even though he played just three conference games, Woodward led all BIG EAST defensive players with 17 ground balls in league action. Cowan scored 11 goals and added five assists in five league games, though he played a very sparingly in the one conference game he did not start.
Williams earns the first postseason accolade of his career after posting a 57.1 faceoff percentage (132-of-231) along with 69 ground balls, four goals and three assists. In BIG EAST play, against three of the top faceoff specialists in the country in Georgetown's James Reilly, Villanova's Justin Coppola and Denver's Alec Stathakis, Williams won an impressive 61.8 percent of the draws he took with 35 ground balls and a pair of goals. He is only the second MU faceoff specialist to earn postseason honors, following Zachary Melillo, who was a three-time all-league selection while playing in a conference with Denver's Trevor Baptiste.
The Golden Eagles will make their sixth appearance in the BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP on May 5 with a semifinal game against top-seeded and No. 2 Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. Central time from Cooper Field in Washington, D.C.
