Jochims Takes First at Walt Crawford Open

MU women take first, men fifth in season opener
CHARLESTON, ILLINOIS – Friday evening the Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Walt Crawford Open hosted by Eastern Illinois. The MU women took home the win with four of their top-five finishers placing inside the top 10. The men took fifth place as a team.
The meet kicked off with the women's five 5k. Junior Kate Jochims lead the entire field taking first overall with a time of 18:22.5. Team captain Emily Noone wasn't far behind finishing third overall in a personal best time of 18:36.5.
Juniors Anna Penzkover and Laurel Moneysmith (18:48.9) rolled to top-10 finishes as well taking fifth and sixth, respectively. Penzkover eclipsed her previous 5k personal best by 16-seconds with a time of 18:40.6.
Sophomore Audrey Grimm rounded out the MU top-five taking 12th overall and crossing the line in a time of 19:12.8. The Cedarburg native crushed her previous 5k personal best finishing 36-seconds faster than her previous mark.
In the men's 8k, Sophomore Dan Weizeorick placed 19th overall with a time of 26:22.1 to pace the MU men.
The men saw contributions from a few of their underclassmen. In only his third collegiate meet, sophomore Tyler Re finished second overall for the Golden Eagles rolling to a time of 26:29.8, placing 21st overall. Freshman Sean Kellogg (26:58.9) and sophomore Thomas Leonard (27:00.7) followed behind taking 27th and 28th, respectively.
"The four freshmen had solid races, and It's exciting to see them transitioning well to the college level out the gates," said head coach Sean Birren.
Junior Jadon Conroy rounded out the men's top-five crossing the line in a time of 27:24.4 finishing 33rd overall. Â

Next week, the squad will be traveling to Green Bay for the Phoenix Invitational on Friday, Sep. 9.
The MUTFXC Alumni Run returns this season on Saturday, Sep. 24 at Doyne Park at 4 p.m.
