The 2019 MLL Defensive Player of the Year picked up five ground balls in the title game
PHILADELPHIA - Marquette M Club Hall of Fame men's lacrosse player Liam Byrnes became the first former MU player to earn a Premier Lacrosse League Championship on Sunday afternoon as Waterdogs LC defeated Chaos at Subaru Park.
Byrnes, an all-star close defenseman, picked up five ground balls in the title game victory to lead the Waterdogs to their first PLL crown. During the regular season, Byrnes led the squad and ranked second in the league with 15 caused turnovers, while also recording 27 ground balls.
The native of West Islip, New York has become one of the world's top lacrosse players, earning Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2019 and was ranked 27th in the 2021 PLL Player Top 50. He captured a silver medal this summer with the Team USA sixes roster while competing at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Byrnes is Marquette's all-time leader in ground balls (218) and caused turnovers (102) and during his final season in 2016 was an USILA Second Team All-American, was BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and All-BIG EAST First Team selection. Byrnes, who has spent time in the PLL, MLL and NLL, was MU's first Major League Lacrosse draft pick by the Florida Launch in 2016.
The Waterdogs LC was the league's first expansion club in 2020 under head coach Andy Copelan and previous rosters featured former Golden Eagles B.J. Grill (2012-16) and Noah Richard (2016-19).
