King Goes for 23 points and nine assists in win over rival Blue Demons
CHICAGO — The Marquette women's basketball team (10-5, 3-3 BIG EAST) picked up a conference road win over DePaul on Wednesday night, posting a 72-63 victory inside of Wintrust Arena.
"I'm just so proud of our effort," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "We were without Liza Karlen tonight and the new players that had to play were awesome. We made some shots obviously, but our defense was great to make it as tough as possible on (Aneesah) Morrow. I'm just proud of our focus and our effort here on the road."Â
With Karlen out of the starting lineup because of injury, Marquette used strong performance out of the gates from senior guard Jordan King, who scored the first eight points of the night for Marquette, to spark the Golden Eagle offense to its highest-scoring first-quarter of the season. Freshman guard Emily La Chapell also got off to a quick start, totaling eight points and five boards in the first 10 minutes to help MU to a 26-16 lead at the quarter break.Â
After leading 46-32 at the half, scoring slowed for both sides as Marquette scored just eight third-quarter points and its lead was cut to seven heading into the fourth, but MU responded by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to go up by as many as 17 points. DePaul eventually cut the deficit back to single-digits, but the Golden Eagles were able to hang on to secure the win over their longest-running rival.Â
King finished with a team-best 23 points to go along with a career-high tying nine assists, while senior forward Chloe Marotta also neared a double-double as she went for 18 points and nine boards, as well as four assists, three blocks and a steal.Â
Playing in her hometown of Chicago, forward Makiyah Williams also brought down nine rebounds, a new career high for the sophomore.Â
The Blue Demons were paced by Aneesah Morrow, who finished with a team-best 24 points and 15 rebounds.Â

This was the 132nd game played for Chloe Marotta, who now sits alone at third all-time in career appearances. She is two games from tying Angel Robinson (2007-11) for second in program history.
