Golden Eagles Picked to Finish Third in Preseason Poll
NEW YORK – Marquette University senior guard Jordan King has been named unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST, the conference announced Tuesday at its annual media day at Madison Square Garden. Senior forward Liza Karlen earned Honorable Mention.
King was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection during the 2022-23 campaign after averaging 15.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She led the Golden Eagles in minutes played, three-point percentage, points, assists, and steals per game.
The Rockton, Illinois, native has started in all 124 games during her collegiate career, averaging 32.5 minutes per contest. King ranked top ten in the BIG EAST in five statistical categories last season: scoring (8th, 15.9), assists (5th, 4.0), steals (5th, 2.0), assist/TO ratio (9th, 1.3), and minutes played (8th, 34.3).
King is the first unanimous selection for Marquette to the preseason All-BIG EAST team since Selena Lott in 2020.
Liza Karlen is coming off a junior season where she averaged 11.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, all career bests. The St. Paul, Minnesota native, started in all but one of her 25 games played and her 7.4 rebounds a contest led the team and was ninth in the BIG EAST.
As a team, the Golden Eagles were picked third in the preseason poll by the conference coaches. Marquette has finished the regular season better than their preseason pick three out of the last four seasons.
Head coach Megan Duffy is entering her fifth season at the helm of Marquette women's basketball. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 21-11 (13-7 BIG EAST) record in 2022-23 with an NCAA tournament berth, the second in the last four years, and wins over No. 3 Texas and No. 4 UConn, the two highest-ranked wins in program history.
Marquette opens the 2023-24 slate at home on Nov. 6 against UT Martin. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.
