Marquette Opens Season Friday, Dec. 1 at Blue and Gold Invite in South Bend, Indiana
MILWAUKEE – Marquette Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Bert Rogers has announced captains for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Leading the women's team is senior Gretchen Pfeiffer, and juniors Julia Beck and Grace Mager. The men's team will be led by senior Dan Weizeorick and junior Sam Cascella. All five student-athletes are first-time captains.
"On a team with a large number of newcomers it's fitting that we have all newcomers as captains," said Rogers. "I have been very pleased to see these five step up in leadership roles this year."
Gretchen Pfeiffer set seven personal bests during the past indoor and outdoor season, including a career-best in the steeplechase where Pfeiffer finished first at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative. The Colleyville, Texas native saw action in 12 meets for the Golden Eagles.
Julia Beck competes in the 55m, 60m, and 100m hurdles for MU. Beck, from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, set a personal best time at the Gibson Invitational at Indiana State in April and finished first in the Warrior Invitational and Marquette Invitational.
Grace Mager, competing in the javelin throw, finished in second at the Marquette Invitational and UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative. Mager, from Wilsonville, Oregon, scored points at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships with a mark of 36.58 meters/120-0 feet.
Dan Weizeorick took fifth in the steeplechase at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships where his time of 8:53.32 is No. 2 all-time at MU. The Lisle, Illinois native clocked the eighth fastest time in program history in the 5000m at the Washu U Distance Carnival in April.
Sam Cascella earned All-BIG EAST honors as a member of the 4x100 team that placed third in the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Cascella, from Wheaton, Illinois, was a member of the 4x100 team that finished second at the Marquette Invitational and set three personal bests in the indoor season, including a PR in the 200m at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
