MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse head coach Andrew Stimmel has announced the program's schedule for the 2024 campaign, featuring five NCAA tournament teams from last season and its usual loaded BIG EAST Conference slate.
The Golden Eagles open the spring semester with a pair of scrimmages, the first an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Valley Fields before an exhibition contest at Duke on Jan. 27.
Marquette opens the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 3 in Colorado Springs, Colorado against Air Force. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 all-time against the Falcons and dropped the most recent matchup at Valley Fields on March 26, 2022. Marquette's first victory in program history was an 8-6 triumph in MU's last trip to Colorado Springs on March 2, 2013, at Falcon Stadium.
The first regular season home game is against Lindenwood on Friday, Feb. 9, one day prior to National Marquette Day on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Golden Eagles then host Detroit Mercy on Tuesday, Feb. 13 and welcome the defending NCAA Champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish for a Sunday, Feb. 18 contest.
Marquette closes the month of February on the road in a neutral site matchup with Michigan at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Naples, Florida. The Golden Eagles defeated the Wolverines, who went on to make an NCAA regional final, in last year's Southwest Florida Shootout, 14-9.
MU returns to Milwaukee on March 2 to welcome Utah, a team that went 12-5 last season and advanced to its first NCAA tournament by winning the ASUN Conference. The Utes defeated Marquette in a high-scoring affair last spring in Salt Lake City, 18-16. Bobby O'Grady scored five goals in the loss, while defenseman Mason Woodward etched his name in the MU record books with 12 ground balls, four caused turnovers and a goal.
The Golden Eagles begin a season-long five-game road swing on March 9 at Bellarmine before another neutral site contest against a Big Ten foe. Marquette topped then-No. 5 Penn State, 12-11, on Long Island last season and will face the Nittany Lions this year on Saturday, March 16 in Springfield, Pennsylvania at Springfield High School.
MU closes non-conference play at St. Bonaventure on March 23 and begins BIG EAST action on March 30 at St. John's. In a shake-up to the usual league slate order, MU heads to Georgetown on April 6 for its fifth-straight match outside of Milwaukee.
The Golden Eagles host consecutive games against Providence and Villanova on April 13 and 20, respectively, before the regular season finale at Denver on Friday, April 26.
The 2024 BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship will be held on Thursday, May 2 and Saturday, May 4 at Villanova.
The Golden Eagles return 94 percent of their point production from last season, including three of the most prolific point producers in program history in Devon Cowan (86g-28a—114 pts), Bobby O'Grady (88g-11a—99 pts) and Jake Stegman (34g-57a—91 pts). Three-time USILA All-American Mason Woodward is one of eight returning starters for Marquette, which also returns graduate faceoff specialists Luke Williams and Grant Evans.
