Five Golden Eagles score in double-figures as MU picks up Senior Night win
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's basketball team (20-9, 13-7 BIG EAST) closed out its regular season with a win on Monday night, defeating DePaul 98-80 at the Al McGuire Center.
"This was an awesome last home game and senior night, I can't say enough about a lot of different players tonight," said Marquette head coach Megan Duffy. "It was great to send Chloe Marotta out in the Al the right way, she was tremendous. We knew this was going to be a game of runs with DePaul, but we weathered the storm and had a great win tonight."
In what was Marquette's highest-scoring game of the season, five different Golden Eagles reached double-figures in the scoring column, including a stellar 22-point performance from forward Chloe Marotta. Marotta, who has played 156 games in a MU uniform, was honored prior to tip-off as part of the team's Senior Night ceremony.
MU pounced early, opening the game with its highest-scoring quarter of the year as it came out firing to take a 34-18 lead through one after making 14 of its 21 first-quarter shots. Its lead stretched to as many as 20-points before the first half was finished, entering the locker room with a 53-35 advantage.
While DePaul eventually clawed within 11 points, the Golden Eagles remained in control the rest of the way. Marquette capitalized on 15 DePaul turnovers and brought down 13 offensive rebounds, scoring 26 second chance points while limiting the Blue Demons to just 10. In total, Marquette won the rebounding battle 36-25.
Liza Karlen led the squad in both points and rebounds, going for a 26-point, 14-rebound double-double to go along with three assists, three steals and two blocks. Jordan King was the third member of the 20-point club as she finished with 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Freshmen Mackenzie Hare (18) and Emily La Chapell (12) each finished in double-figures as well.
The Blue Demons were paced by Aneesah Morrow, who finished with a game-high 29 points.
