MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women's basketball team and head coach Megan Duffy announced the team's 2022-23 individual award winners at its annual banquet Sunday night.Â
This year's team MVP Award was given to senior guard Jordan King. A unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, King led the team in scoring (15.9), assists (4.0) and steals (2.0) per game, while starting all 32 contests and logging over 1,000 minutes on the court this season. She was the team's most efficient 3-point shooter at 35.7 percent (45-of-126), and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times.
Defensive Player of the Year honors were awarded to junior guard Rose Nkumu, who helped Marquette establish one of the nation's top defenses. MU led the BIG EAST in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 58.2 points per game while limiting them to just 38.9 percent shooting from the field. Nkumu totaled 55 steals on the year, and often drew the assignment of guarding the opponent's best offensive player. Nkumu is also the recipient of the team's MU Strong award, an honor given to the player with the most total practice points which are charted throughout the season.Â
A pair of Golden Eagles share this season's Most Improved Player honors, as freshman guard Emily La Chapell and senior forward Chloe Marotta were both recognized. La Chapell broke onto the scene this year as a true freshman, starting 20 games for Marquette and earning unanimous BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honors. She averaged 5.3 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest, and was the first MU freshman to start 20 or more games since Jordan King in 2019-20. Marotta made an enormous statistical leap in her fifth and final year at Marquette, improving from 6.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game a season ago to 14.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest this year to earn All-BIG EAST First Team accolades.Â
Marotta was also recognized as the team's Marquette Made Award winner, an honor which goes to a player which demonstrates a high level leadership and character, and accels not just in basketball, but also in the community and the classroom. Along with her contributions on the court, Marotta has served as the president of Marquette's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the past two years and has logged countless hours of service to her fellow student-athletes as well as her community. Her Rebounds for Research campaign raised over $30,000 for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.Â
