
Marquette WLAX Earns First NCAA Tournament Bid

Golden Eagles will face Richmond Friday in North Carolina
MILWAUKEE — The No. 19 Marquette University women's lacrosse team (15-3, 5-1 BIG EAST) earned an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAA DI Women's Lacrosse Championship, and will face Richmond in the first round.Â
This will be the first ever appearance in the tournament for the Golden Eagles, who are in the midst of a historic 2023 campaign which has seen them reach a program-record 15 wins. Marquette is one of three BIG EAST teams which heard its name called during the selection show Sunday night, joining UConn and 5-seed Denver.Â
The winner of Marquette and Richmond will advance to face the winner of Sacred Heart and 4-seed North Carolina.Â
The game will take place on Friday, May 12 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at UNC's Dorrance Field. First draw is set for 4 p.m. CT.Â

 2023 has been a historic season already for Marquette, winning a program-record 15 games, including a 5-1 record in BIG EAST play to earn a second-place finish, their highest in program history.Â

The Golden Eagles posted an 8-1 road record, including an unbeaten road slate during the regular season, improving from 2-8 away from home last season.Â

Marquette's only losses this season have come to teams currently ranked 12 or higher in RPI.Â

Attacker Mary Schumar has shattered program records for a single season in both points (89) and assists (69). Her 3.83 assist per game average leads the NCAA and ranks fourth in women's college lacrosse history.Â

Midfielder Lydia Foust leads the BIG EAST with 58 goals this season, and is just one goal shy of tying the program's all-time single season mark.Â

As a team, Marquette has set program records for goals (295), assists (148) and points (443) in a season.Â
