Head tennis coach worked for 20 years at MU, led team to BIG EAST title
Steve Rodecap, who has worked with both the men's and women's tennis programs at Marquette for the last 20 years, is leaving the University, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl announced Wednesday morning.
Â
Rodecap served as head coach of the men's team for each of the past 20 seasons and prior to the 2019-20 campaign was promoted to Director of Tennis, working as the head coach for both the men's and women's programs. He is departing for a position within athletics administration at Emporia State University and current men's assistant coach Jud Shaufler will serve as the interim director of tennis.
Â
"We sincerely appreciate Steve's contributions not only to the department, but the University as a whole," Scholl said. "Under his leadership, our tennis programs encountered success on the court and in the classroom and he has had a tremendous impact on literally hundreds of student-athletes."
Â
Rodecap guided the men's team to a 262-201 record during his tenure, highlighted by a BIG EAST Conference tournament title and NCAA appearance in 2017-18. He led the squad to 14 winning seasons, four league championship match appearances and leaves as the program's all-time leader in career victories. Numerous players earned all-conference accolades under his guidance and the team's record book features career record holders from during his time.
Â
The longest-tenured current head coach at Marquette, Rodecap also guided the women's team in each of the last three seasons.
Â
"So many people made my time at Marquette special, but I want to specifically thank Bill Cords for giving me a chance to lead the men's program 20 years ago, all of the tremendous coaches and administrators I have worked with and most importantly, the student-athletes who competed for Marquette and went on to become tremendous ambassadors for the University," Rodecap said. "This was a very difficult decision for my family. I am extremely excited about a new opportunity and extremely appreciative for the opportunity MU provided."
