Award Presented Annually to Best Power Forward in the Nation
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Marquette senior Liza Karlen has been named a 2024 Katrina McClain Award Top 10 candidate, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Thursday.
The Katrina McClain Award - named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year at Georgia – is in its seventh season and recognizes the top power forward in the nation. The award is one of five positional awards that comprise the Naismith Starting Five each season. The selection committee for the awards is composed of top women's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
Karlen averages 17.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and has collected three BIG EAST Player of the Week honors this season. The senior became the 34th 1,000-point scorer in program history with her fifth point at Seton Hall on Jan. 9, and finished with a career-high 30 points.
The St. Paul, Minnesota native is the only BIG EAST player to be named AP Player of the Week this season after averaging 24.5 points, 8.0 rebounds in wins over then-No. 20 Creighton and App State in December.
Fan voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starts Friday, Jan. 26, on hoophallawards.com. The fan vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
The final five candidates for the award will be released to the public on a day-by-day basis starting the week of March 4, with voting set to follow on March 8.
Previous winners of the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award are Maddy Siegrist, Villanova (2023), NaLyssa Smith, Baylor (2021-22), Ruthy Hebard, Oregon (2018, '20), and Napheesa Collier, Connecticut (2019).
