Golden Eagles complete first year under new head coach Jack Hackett
NORTON, Ohio – Marquette University cross country wrapped up its 2024 season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday in Norton, Ohio.
"Our goal was to move up in the regional this year, and the women's team achieved that," Associate Head Cross Country Coach Jack Hackett said. "The men's team fell a place, but I'm proud of the group. We have come a long way in 12 weeks. Things are definitely looking up for Marquette Cross Country."
Emma Coon paced the women's side with a career-best 6k time of 21:38.9.
Sadie Kibelstis (22:19.6), Gianna Konen (22:52.6), Emily Capper (22:55.6), Gretchen Pfeiffer (23:20.9) and Ava Thomas (23:26.0) all set 6k PRs.
"The women's team ran really strong, Hackett said. "Quite a few PRs despite the muddy conditions. The course was slippery and a lot slower than what it could be but Emma lead us with another big performance. I am very excited about the growth she's shown so far this year, and can't wait to see what we can do in the future."
David Zeller led the men's side in his final cross country race for MU. The graduate student ran a 31.58.4 10k.
"The men's race was a little rough, in part because the men step up to 10k," Hackett said. "Half our team was racing 5k's as their longest race last year, so to jump to 10k, in a slippery, muddy mess, definitely didn't help. That said, I was proud of how the team put themselves in a position to make something happen. We got out hard and were aggressive, which is something I feel we have lacked this season, so that was a great sign. We just need more miles under our legs, and we'll come back much stronger next year. I want to give a special shout out to David Zeller, he got after it and executed beautifully for his last collegiate race ever."
