MILWAUKEE – Marquette University head women's volleyball coach Ryan Theis has announced the team's 2024 schedule, including an 18-match BIG EAST Conference slate and nine games against teams that won at least one NCAA tournament contest in 2023.
"We believe we've built a challenging schedule for this fall, which once again will rank as one of the nation's toughest non-conference slates," Theis said. "Since this team has aspirations of being one of the best Marquette has ever had, it is essential that we test ourselves throughout the season. All but one of our opponents before BIG EAST play begins in late September qualified for last year's NCAA tournament, and we will have ample opportunities in front of hostile road crowds."
The Golden Eagles face seven teams during non-conference action that ended last year ranked in the top 35 of the NCAA ratings percentage index rankings and a total of nine teams that qualified for NCAA tournament play.
Last season, the Golden Eagles captured a third-consecutive BIG EAST Conference regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Marquette returns six starters and 13 letter winners from last year's roster.
Marquette volleyball season ticket members from 2023 will have the opportunity to renew their season tickets by contacting the Marquette Ticket Office by email or calling 414-288-GOMU (4668). New season, single, and group match tickets will be available for purchase in July.
Schedule Highlights:
After opening the regular season with a rematch from the 2023 NCAA First Round at Eastern Illinois on Aug. 30, the Golden Eagles return home to host the Cardinal in a midweek match at the Al McGuire Center.
MU then hosts the Jayhawks on Sept. 6 and Western Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 8 in addition to a neutral site contest between those two squads on Saturday afternoon at the Al.
The Golden Eagles have squared off against Kansas twice in Theis' tenure and fell, 3-1, last fall in Lawrence, Kansas. MU won the first set at KU, 25-21, but spotted the Jayhawks leads in the second and third sets before falling in four frames. WMU won the Mid-American Conference title in 2023 and captured an NCAA First Round sweep of Auburn as its final of 31 wins last season.
The Golden Eagles hit the road in the two weeks prior to conference play, beginning on Friday, Sept. 13 at Western Kentucky in the Hyatt Place Invitational. MU is also set to face Dayton in the WKU gym on Saturday, Sept. 14.
MU, WKU and Dayton all played last fall at the Flyer Invitational to open the season in Dayton, Ohio. The Golden Eagles lost last year's lid-lifter to the Hilltoppers before securing a five-set win over the Flyers the following afternoon. Both opponents won at least 30 matches in 2023, including an NCAA tournament match.
After a midweek contest against Wisconsin at UW Field House in Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 17, Marquette heads to Pittsburgh in a return matchup from last fall.
Pitt, a former BIG EAST Conference rival, has advanced to the last two Final Fours under head coach Dan Fisher and ended the 2023 campaign at the No. 4 spot in the NCAA's RPI rankings. MU had won the last five meetings against the Panthers as fellow BIG EAST members, but dropped last year's contest at the Al, the first meeting in a decade.
MU faces Pitt on Sunday, Sept. 22 after a Saturday, Sept. 21 neutral site contest against East Carolina.
The BIG EAST slate opens in Milwaukee on the weekend of Sept. 27 with a Friday evening game against UConn at the Al McGuire Center. MU also faces Providence on Sunday, Sept. 29, before a Tuesday, Oct. 1 trip to league rival Creighton. CU's return trip to Milwaukee is Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Al McGuire Center.
In total, MU will play 10 of its 18 league games at home and will only face UConn and Providence once.
The Golden Eagles also play two non-conference games during BIG EAST play on the week of Oct. 21. MU hosts Milwaukee on Tuesday, Oct. 22 and plays at Princeton, on Saturday, Oct. 26, while on its Seton Hall/Georgetown road swing.
The 2024 BIG EAST Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Presented by JEEP is slated for Thanksgiving week in Omaha, Nebraska.
