CHESTER, Pennsylvania - Four-time Marquette University USILA All-American and current assistant coach Mason Woodward provided a key two-point goal in Sunday's championship game to help the Utah Archers repeat as Premier Lacrosse League champions.
Woodward, who played lockdown defense to hold PLL Rookie of the Year TJ Malone scoreless, also added three ground balls and caused a turnover in the 12-8 win over the Maryland Whipsnakes at Subaru Park.
The native of Towson, Maryland was a first round selection of the Archers in the spring's PLL College Draft and concluded his rookie campaign with seven points on three goals and a pair of two-pointers, alongside 26 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. In the two PLL playoff games he notched seven ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Woodward's goal against the Whipsnakes came with 10:54 remaining in the second quarter after the Archers had fallen behind 4-1 less than a minute earlier. The score pulled Utah within one, 4-3, before goals from Tre Leclaire and Grant Ament within the next two minutes gave the Archers their first lead.
He chased down Maryland's Ryan Conrad at midfield and after a big play to jar the ball loose, kicked the ball forward to himself as he pushed back toward the Whipsnakes net and the two-point arc. His play provided a boost of energy the Archers needed in their comeback attempt.
"I thought Mason Woodward's two-point goal really got the boys going," said PLL title game MVP Brett Dobson, who stopped 17 shots on net behind Woodward. "I felt like it was a big juice play, especially the way he hunted Conrad down."
