MINNEAPOLIS – The Marquette women's basketball team (2-1) dropped its first game of the season at Minnesota, 90-47, on Tuesday at Williams Arena. The Golden Eagles were held to 32.7% shooting (15-of-55) and committed 19 turnovers as they struggled to find their footing throughout the night in their first road game of the year.
MU was led by Lee Volker who finished with 13 points but Minnesota had balance with seven players scoring between 7-19 points.
Following five turnovers in the early going, Minnesota jumped out to an 11-0 lead. The Golden Eagles' drought ended with 6:09 on the clock on a put-back from Volker. The Golden Gophers answered and pushed their lead back up to 10 with a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter. MU finished the quarter with nine turnovers.
Minnesota's lead hovered there until a 10-2 stretch ended the quarter. The Gophers ended the second just as they did the first, with a 3-pointer with the clock winding down to go up 45-26 at the half.
Minnesota pushed its advantage over 20 to open the third but triples from Jaidynn Mason and Skylar Forbes cut the deficit to 49-34 with 6:10 on the clock, forcing a timeout from the home side. Following the stoppage, The Gophers closed out the quarter on a 16-3 run to take a 65-37 lead heading into the fourth. MU connected on just 1-of-8 during the final six minutes of the period.
