Guard Chase Ross Scores Career-High 31 points
The Marquette University men's basketball team (3–2, 0–0 BIG EAST) fell to Maryland (3–1, 0–0 Big Ten) 89–82 on Saturday afternoon at Fiserv Forum.
Senior guard Chase Ross led Marquette with a career-high 31 points on 10-for-18 shooting. Ben Gold contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, while Zaide Lowery added 14 points and eight boards.
Maryland opened the game with a strong offensive stretch, converting its first six field-goal attempts, including four three-pointers, to take a 16–7 lead. Marquette responded as its offense settled in, using a 13–1 run capped by Lowery's alley-oop from Nigel James Jr. to pull within one at the 4:02 mark after trailing by as many as 13. The Golden Eagles held the Terrapins without a field goal for more than six minutes to close the half, entering the break tied at 42.
Marquette opened the second half with a 6–0 run and built a 57–48 advantage following a Ross jumper at 13:26. Maryland countered with a 12–2 run later in the period to regain an eight-point lead with eight minutes remaining. Marquette narrowed the deficit to five with 11 seconds left, but Maryland secured the win at the free-throw line.
