Freshman guard Nigel James Jr. finishes with 14 points
The Marquette University men's basketball team (4-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) continued non-conference play with a 75-74 loss against Oklahoma (5-2, 0-0 SEC) on Friday afternoon at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago.
Â
Senior guard Chase Ross led the way with 21 points and added five rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Nigel James Jr. scored a personal-high 21 points and sophomore forward Royce Parham chipped in a season-high 13 points off the bench.
Â
Marquette pushed the four-point intermission advantage to double figures (48-37) in the opening minutes of the second half, courtesy of Ross' offensive burst. The Sooners, however, responded for the second time and used an extended MU scoring drought to take a 55-52 lead with 7:16 left. The Sooners would eventually pull ahead 69-62 with 3:37 on the clock, but a trey by Ross tied the score at 72-72 with 58 seconds remaining. Trailing 75-74 with 17.9 seconds after a Sooners' turnover, MU saw its shot at the buzzer go off target and the late rally fell just short.
Â
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 13 points in the first half and 37-33 at the intermission. MU used an early 8-0 run to move ahead and never trailed over the course of the opening 20 minutes, but the Sooners closed the stanza with a 9-0 run over the last five minutes to close the gap.
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles conclude the home portion of the non-conference schedule on Tuesday, Dec. 2 when the team hosts Valparaiso at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
