Golden Eagles collect 70 points in program's debut
The Marquette University women's swimming team officially became the university's 17th varsity program on Friday afternoon with the team's season-opening meet at Iowa.
Iowa claimed a 189-70 victory in the dual competition, but the focus for the Golden Eagles was on a day of first-time accomplishment as a team.Â
"I'm really proud of the team and how it represented Marquette University," head coach Joel Rollings said. "We're really young and learning how to compete. We raced really well and will learn how to close out races as we continue to gain experience.
"We purposely created a challenging dual meet schedule in an effort to get better and today was the first step in that process," Rollings added. "It's great to have our first meet behind us and can't wait to host our first event next Friday."
A total of 18 student-athletes made their respective debuts and the 200-yard medley relay team of Mackenzie Choinski, Enya Linson, Nina Newton and Allie Seiler scored the first points in program history.
Other highlights included Bridget Corro's second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:33.77 for the team's first points by an individual. Linson clocked solid results in three events, highlighted by a second-place effort in the 200-yard IM (2:10.26). Choinski also claimed fourth in a pair of backstroke events.
First-year Marquette assistant coach Megan Hartlieb swam for the Hawkeyes from 2023-25 and was named to the Big Ten Academic Honor Roll during her tenure.
The Golden Eagles will host their first-ever home meet on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. CT when the squad welcomes Northern Iowa to the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility.
