The 2025-26 campaign will mark the fifth for Cody Hatt as an assistant coach with the Marquette University men’s basketball program.
Hatt served under Smart for six seasons at Texas, most recently as an assistant coach (2020-21). He was the director of basketball operations for the four years (2016-20) previous and worked as a special assistant in 2015-16.
In 2024-25, the Golden Eagles posted their third-straight 20-win season and participated in the NCAA tournament four the fourth-straight year. On the court, Kam Jones developed into a Consensus All-America selection, marking the third-straight year a Marquette player captured the accolade. MU also posted a standout season in the classroom, highlighted by a 3.28 team grade-point-average and Stevie Mitchell was named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a CSC First Team Academic All-American.
The 2023-24 campaign was highlighted by the program’s 17th all-time appearance in the Sweet 16 and the team’s 56 victories (29-7, 27-10) were the most in school history in a two-year span. Back-to-back Consensus All-America selection Tyler Kolek, just the third ever at Marquette, highlighted the team’s individual recognition on the court. Off the court, the Golden Eagles collected another record-setting effort in the classroom as a team and both Oso Ighodaro (Second Team) and Stevie Mitchell (Third Team) were named CSC Academic All-Americans.
Hatt helped guide Marquette to a historic level of success in 2022-23, highlighted by the program’s first BIG EAST Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Golden Eagles won a team-record 29 games and tied the league record for wins (17). MU earned its highest national ranking in nearly 50 years and the roster featured the league’s player of the year (Tyler Kolek), sixth man award winner (David Joplin) and a pair of all-league honorees (Kam Jones and Oso Ighodaro).
Marquette earned a No. 2 seed, highest in program history, in the NCAA tournament and claimed an opening-round win over Vermont in Columbus, Ohio.
In his first season at Marquette, Hatt helped direct the Golden Eagles to a NCAA tournament appearance, a national ranking and assisted in the development of all-league performers Justin Lewis (first team), Darryl Morsell (honorable mention) and Kam Jones (all-freshman team).
During Hatt’s tenure alongside Smart on the Texas staff, the Longhorns compiled a 109-86 (.559) mark and advanced to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances (2016, 2018 and 2021) while also winning the 2019 National Invitation Tournament Championship.
The 2020-21 campaign was highlighted by the program’s first-ever Big 12 Championship title, a top-five national ranking during the regular season and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. Six different players earned all-conference accolades, including Kai Jones (Sixth Man Award) and Andrew Jones (second team). Matt Coleman III, a third-team all-league choice, was named the MVP of the Big 12 Championship.
During the summer of 2016, Hatt served on the support staff for the USA Under 18 National Team led by head coach Shaka Smart. The team, which featured notable players Jarrett Allen, Mohamed Bamba, Matt Coleman III, Markelle Fultz, Michael Porter Jr., P.J. Washington and Trae Young, posted a 5-0 mark and earned a gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Valdivia, Chile.
Hatt served as a graduate assistant at VCU under Smart during the 2014-15 season. The Rams posted a 26-10 overall record, including a 12-6 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference and a No. 25 ranking in the final AP poll. VCU captured the 2015 Atlantic 10 Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Round of 64 before falling to Ohio State in overtime. This marked the program’s first A10 title and ninth overall conference title for VCU.
Prior to joining Smart’s staff at VCU, Hatt served as head boys’ basketball coach, assistant dean of students and academic advisor for one year (2013-14) at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt. He also spent one season (2012-13) as the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Vermont Academy.
He began his undergraduate career with a one-year stay at Springfield College (Springfield, Mass.) in 2004-05. Hatt transferred to Norwich University (Northfield, Vt.) and was a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship team while also earning All-Academic GNAC honors during the 2005-06 season. A three-year varsity player under coach Paul Booth, Hatt was named the Norwich Male Scholar Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2007-08.
Following graduation, Hatt served two years (2008-10) as a content editor at ESPN in Bristol, Conn., where he worked on shows such as “SportsCenter” and a variety of other specialty shows across various network platforms. He then spent one year (2010-11) as a content contributor for “New England Recruiting Report” and an event manager for Hoop Mountain, a national leader in basketball tournaments, camps and showcases. Hatt assisted NERR founding editor Adam Finkelstein in prospect evaluation, event coverage and features and supplied relevant content for Finkelstein’s web site and national scouting service.
Hatt earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in communications with a concentration in digital media technology from Norwich University in 2008. He received his Master of Education degree in sport leadership from VCU in 2015.
A native of Springfield, Vt., Hatt was a four-year varsity starter at Springfield High School. He was a two-time all-state selection and two-time captain who scored over 1,000 career points.
Hatt and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Lyla and Will.
