Trake Carpenter, a two-time BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honoree (2018, 2019), enters his third season at Marquette in 2019-20.
Alongside head coach Steve Bailey, Carpenter assists in all aspects of the program, including practice, recruiting and team operations. Carpenter came to Marquette prior to the 2017-18 season with a skill set including collegiate coaching and club professional work, as well as significant business experience outside of golf.
Bailey and Carpenter led the Golden Eagles to several program all-time bests in 2018-19:
- A top-50 end-of-season ranking in the Golfstat NCAA Team Ranking
- Single-digit NCAA regional seeding for the first time, earning the No. 8 seed in the Austin Regional
- A program-best 2.00 team score versus par
- Two players ranked in the Golfstat NCAA Men's Player Ranking top-100 (Oliver Farrell, Hunter Eichhorn)
- Three team wins, matching a record set in 2007-08
In his first season at Marquette, Carpenter and head coach Steve Bailey were named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year, leading the Golden Eagles to a No. 66 final Division I Golfstat ranking, and to the team's first GCAA Golfweek/Bushnell Top 25 poll appearance in program history. Carpenter and Bailey also guided BIG EAST Champion Hunter Eichhorn and Matt Murlick to the two best NCAA Regional individual finishes in program history. In addition, Marquette posted its lowest scoring average (288.55) and average vs. par (2.55) in school history, in addition to a record 32-under-par (832) win at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in September of 2017.
After graduating from Ball State in 2012, Carpenter spent three seasons as an assistant at his alma mater under Mike Fleck. He helped lead the Cardinals to the school’s first NCAA Men’s Golf Championship appearance in 2013 at Capital City Club in Atlanta, Georgia. To get there, Ball State advanced out of the NCAA Pullman (Wash.) Region with a playoff victory over San Diego State to earn a trip to the national championships.
Prior to his arrival at Marquette, Carpenter was the assistant golf professional at Ivanhoe Club in Mundelein, Illinois. He coordinated tournaments and oversaw day-to-day guest operations on the course. Carpenter also has ownership, management and financial experience from the food service industry.
Carpenter was a four-year player at Ball State. His collegiate highlights include career low round (67) and event scores (209) during his senior year in 2011-12, and he was co-medalist at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. That season, he earned Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors and was the recipient of the Ball State Earl Yestingsmeier Student-Athlete Award, given to a graduating men’s golf senior who displays distinguished athletic, academic and community credentials. He earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2011 and was named Ball State’s Most Improved Player in 2010.
Carpenter earned his B.S. in Risk Management and Insurance from Ball State in 2012.
