Bo Lori is in his third season with the Marquette University men’s lacrosse program in 2023-24 as an assistant coach.
In his role as offensive coordinator, Lori led MU to two of its top-four scoring seasons in program history over his first two seasons at Marquette in 2022 and 2023. The 2023 team scored a program-record 13.29 goals per game (186 total) with a record 6.29 assists per game (88 total). The 2022 team also scored a program record 29 man-up goals, led by BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Bobby O'Grady's 13. O'Grady posted a MU freshman-record 45 goals in 2022 and has emerged as one of the best scorer's in program history. Under Lori's tutelage, O'Grady, Devon Cowan and Jake Stegman each turned in all-conference seasons in 2023 and are among MU's most efficient offensive players in program history.
“Bo emerged out of a deep and talented candidate pool as someone we feel identifies directly with our guys and aligns perfectly with our program and greater university mission” Stimmel said at the time of his hire. “In speaking with coaches and former players, it was apparent that Coach Lori is an incredible connector and relationship builder.”
Lori comes to Marquette after three seasons on Lars Tiffany’s staff at Virginia, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach and helped the Cavaliers win the 2019 NCAA Championship.
“Outside of his impressive track record as a young rising star in our profession, the number one thing that stuck out to me was how highly his former players spoke of him,” Stimmel said. “They loved playing for him and have a deep trust in his ability to make them better as athletes and people. We are thrilled to welcome Coach Lori to the Marquette Family!”
While at Virginia, Lori worked primarily on the defensive side with Tiffany, coaching a 2019 squad that led the nation in ground balls per game (41.55) and limited opponents to one of the nation’s lowest clearing efficiencies (71.1 percent – No. 2 in NCAA). That team was one of only two nationally in the top-20 on offense and defense and its 3.85 scoring margin ranked fourth nationally and tops in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
“I am very grateful for the opportunity to join the Marquette Lacrosse family,” Lori said “In only a few short years as a program, it is remarkable how quickly Marquette has put its stamp on Division I lacrosse. The rapid growth of the program speaks volumes to the leadership at the helm of Marquette Athletics, as well as the hard work and dedication of those who have put a Marquette jersey over their shoulders. I could not be more excited to join Coach Stimmel, Coach (Jake) Richard, and the rest of the staff in the pursuit of excellence at Marquette.”
Lori was a three-year member of the lacrosse program at Ohio State and an integral part of the short-stick defensive midfield unit, appearing in all but one game from 2016-18. The Buckeye teams that Lori was a part of were known for their tough and tenacious defensive play, leading the Big Ten Conference in goals against average in both 2017 (8.38 GAA) and 2018 (8.52 GAA). Lori was also a member of Ohio State’s winningest class in program history with 43 career wins. Lori’s junior year at Ohio State was the winningest season in program history and ended with the opportunity to play on Memorial Day in the national championship game.
The team captain was an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete all three years and an Academic All-Big Ten selection in two of his three years. He graduated in 2018 as a sports industry major with a 3.43 GPA and a minor in business.
Prior to his time in Columbus, Lori was a member of the Lehigh Lacrosse team for one year, where he appeared in 15 games as a long-stick midfielder, as well as being named to the Patriot League Honor Roll.
During his undergraduate years he had a role in coaching for both the Resolute Club Lacrosse program as well as the FCA club lacrosse program.
A native of Hudson, Ohio, Lori was a two-time US Lacrosse High School All-America attackman. Bo was named Ohio Player of The Year after his junior season, in which he broke Hudson High School’s single season points record with 121 points. Bo was also a standout hockey player in high school and graduated with the career points record for his high school with 200 career points.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT LORI…
Former coaches:
“If you are looking for a role model, for a man to emulate with how you live a wholesome, altruistic and others-focused life, focus in on Bo. The man cares deeply about his family and his faith, and he simply never loses sight of this. As a lacrosse coach, he is very talented: Bo made a direct impact on our defensive players and he played a critical role in our National Championship in 2019. Once Bo arrived in Charlottesville, our defenders, especially our short-stick defensive midfielders such as John Fox, Dave Smith, Matt Dziama and Cory Harris, improved tremendously.” – Lars Tiffany, Virginia Head Coach
“Bo Lori is a difference maker and I have no doubt he will make an immediate impact on the Marquette Lacrosse Family. His energy, enthusiasm and love for the game is second to none. He will have the opportunity to learn and grow under another great Buckeye in Andrew Stimmel. It is clear that Coach Stimmel is building something special at Marquette and look forward to watching both these Buckeyes chase success together.” – Nick Myers, Ohio State Head Coach
Former student-athletes:
“I can honestly say I would not be the player and person I am today without Coach Lori. He entered our program with confidence and extensive amounts of knowledge that elevated everyone’s game on the defensive end of the field. He coaches with passion and leadership, which is exemplified in the success and result of our 2019 championship season.” – Jared Connors, Virginia (USILA First Team All-America)
“Coach Lori immediately changed our program for the better. His passion alone motivates you to be a better player, let alone his immense knowledge of the game. I challenge you to find a man on our roster with anything but positive things to say about Coach. The 2019 National Championship does not happen without Coach Lori. He has taught me more off the field than I think he even knows; he is an incredible man that has changed my life for the better.” – John Fox, Virginia (team captain)
“Coach Lori is as high energy and passionate of a coach as I’ve come around. His ability to connect with his players on a deep and meaningful level and relate to players on a personal level allows him to coach his players tough. He is the first to put his arm around someone who is having a bad day, but also the first to let someone know when the standard isn’t being met.” – Ryan Terefenko, Ohio State (USILA First Team All-America)
