Peet Poillon is in his second season as associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Marquette in 2020-21.
Marquette had a record-setting offensive pace during his first season, which was cut short at seven games due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Through seven games, the MU offense posted its highest goal (17.14) and point (11.71) per game averages in program history and the squad scooped up 31.86 ground balls per game, its highest single season average.
His first offense at MU relied heavily upon true freshmen, including five starters. MU's top-three point producers, Chris Kirschner (20 points), Devon Cowan (17) and Jake Stegman (15) made up the NCAA's only true freshman starting attack unit and classmate Griffin Fries started MU's final game at Michigan in the midfield.
Kirschner became the first player in Marquette history to open his career with at least two goals in his first five collegiate games and scored in all seven games as a first-year player. He joined Tyler Melnyk (2014), Ryan McNamara (2016) and John Wagner (2018) as the only MU players to ever record hat tricks in three straight games.
“Peet has proven over his career that he possesses a relentless work ethic and ability to identify and develop talent, while also building deep, meaningful relationships with his players,” Marquette head coach Andrew Stimmel said at the time of his hiring in June of 2019. “Over this past season, he led Hobart to unprecedented offensive success and is one of the best offensive minds in college lacrosse. Couple that with his elite playing career as an MLL All-Star and we couldn’t have hand-picked a better fit for our program and university. We could not be more excited to have Coach Poillon and his wife, Melissa, as part of the Marquette Family."
Poillon, a four-time Major League Lacrosse All-Star, coached NCAA Division I’s ninth-ranked offense as the offensive coordinator at Hobart in 2019. The Statesmen scored 223 goals (13.94 per game) and went 11-5, recording their highest single-season win total since joining Division I in 1995. Poillon’s man-up unit was sixth nationally, converting at a .446 clip (25-of-56) as Hobart set new program records for goals, assists (148) and points (371).
The Statesmen finished second in the Northeast Conference regular season standings in 2019 and advanced to the championship game of the NEC tournament. During Poillon’s time at Hobart, the program advanced to the NCAA tournament after going 10-7 in 2016 and captured the NEC regular season crown while going 5-1 in league play in 2017.
He coached eight All-NEC attackmen at Hobart, including 2017 NEC Player of the Year Frank Brown and All-NEC First Teamers Eric Holden (2019) and Alex Love (2015).
Poillon's Division I coaching resume includes assistant coaching roles at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and the University of Delaware, where he served as a volunteer assistant.
He also has head coaching experience, leading the boys’ varsity team at Seneca Valley High School in Harmony, Pennsylvania, for two seasons. He guided his alma mater from an 8-10 record in his first season to a 17-2 mark and the 2012 WPIAL Division I Championship.
Poillon began his coaching career as a student assistant at UMBC while completing his bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship in sports and interdisciplinary studies, which he earned in May 2010.
After beginning his college career at Howard Community College, he played one season at both Ohio State (2008), and UMBC (2009). In both of his seasons at HCC, he was a team captain, earning first team all-America honors as well as conference offensive player of the year accolades.
At OSU, where he was a teammate of MU head coach Andrew Stimmel, Poillon garnered first team All-Great Western Lacrosse League honors as well as USILA All-America honorable mention, helping the Buckeyes reach the NCAA quarterfinals. With the Retrievers, he earned First Team All-America East, USILA Second Team All-America and USILA Scholar All-America awards and returned to the NCAA tournament.
Poillon was drafted by the Boston Cannons out of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and later signed with the Chesapeake Bayhawks. In his second season with the Bayhawks, he was selected to his first MLL All-Star Game and helped Chesapeake win the 2010 MLL Championship. In 2011 and 2012, Poillon played for the Denver Outlaws, earning All-Star honors both years. As one of the Charlotte Hounds leading scorers in 2013, Poillon helped Charlotte secure a spot in the four-team MLL Playoffs in the franchise's second season.
Poillon is the founder and CEO of Low and Away Lacrosse which, since 2009, has offered lacrosse instruction in the form of camps, clinics, and club teams with locations in Pittsburgh and Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, Melissa, welcomed their first child, son, Reid Poillon, on Nov. 20, 2019.
