Carolyn Smith

Dr. Carolyn Smith, a board-certified family practice physician, joined the Marquette University Medical Clinic in 2002 and served as its executive director until 2018.Â
In 2004, she was named head medical team physician and medical director for the department of intercollegiate athletics and the athletic training educational program, a position she still holds.Â
She is currently an associate clinical professor in the Program of Exercise Science, Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Sciences.Â
Prior to joining Marquette, Dr. Smith was an assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine where she was the director of the Sports Medicine Program at the St. Michael Hospital Family Practice Residency Program and faculty in the Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship.Â
She has presented at numerous conferences and has published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, The New Physician, Clinics in Family Practice, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, and the Journal of Physiology. She is the co-author of Running for Women, a book published in 2012.
An avid runner, Dr. Smith competed for the University of Wisconsin and participated in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. She holds two national age-group records in the 12-hour run and is a former 100K and 24-hour national ultra marathon champion. She was a member of the USA Track and Field 100K National Team on eight occasions.
Dr. Smith completed her medical studies at the University of Illinois and her residency training at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She was a visiting fellow in the orthopedic sports medicine program at the University of Wisconsin.Â
