MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette men?s soccer team won its sixth straight game this evening behind a strong team defensive effort and the strong right leg of Jeremiah Bass. The junior defender buried the first goal of his collegiate career at the 20:50 mark of the first half and withheld a surging Memphis attack throughout the second half for a 1-0 victory over the Tigers. Marquette improved to 6-4-0 and 3-1-0 with the win.
?We had an impressive performance and should have had two or three goals in the first 15 minutes,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?But we didn?t get them, so Jeremiah?s goal was important. We worked hard again and deserved this gutsy win.?
The Golden Eagles opened the game with several solid scoring opportunities in the early-going. Bass, a two time All-C-USA Third Team selection found the back of the net in the 21st minute after a strong individual effort from Sean Reti. The sophomore midfielder carried the ball along the right wing, cut back towards the middle of the field past two Tiger defenders and layed a pass off to the feet of Bass. The junior defender took things from there, sending a bullet to the far corner that deflected in off a backtracking Tiger defender. The assist extended Reti?s point-scoring streak to four games. Marquette took the 1-0 lead into the break.
Greg Guglielmino and Andy Hunter rallied the Golden Eagle defense in the second half to protect the 1-0 lead. A resilient Memphis attack, led by swift forwards Steven Brooks and Sean Fraser continually pushed the ball deep into Marquette territory to no avail.
?Our defense had a fine performance this evening,? Adlard said. ?It was only a one-goal game, and that keeps Memphis in the game. Brooks and Fraser were tremendously quick and we were concerned about them. But we recognized that pressure and focused very well. Andy Hunter had a lot to do with that again.?
Hunter returned to play the entire 90 minutes after leaving Marquette?s last game with a bruised foot. Guglielmino recorded his third shutout of the season for Marquette, making four saves. Marshall Morehead saw his six-game goal scoring streak come to an end.
Marquette is back in action at the Valley on Sun., Oct. 3, when the Golden Eagles host #12 Creighton at 1 p.m. (CT).
