MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Marshall Morehead?s goal with only 1:27 left in the game gave the Marquette men?s soccer team a 1-0 upset victory over #12 Creighton this afternoon in the driving rain at Valley Fields. Morehead?s 23-yard blast from just above the top of the box froze Creighton keeper Tom Zawislan and found the back of the net, making the Golden Eagles winners for the seventh consecutive game. That seven-game winning streak ties the program?s record, set in 1996. Marquette improved to 7-4-0 with the win, while Creighton is now 5-2-1.
?Our defense played a spirited game throughout the contest, but you could feel the offensive momentum shift in the second half,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?Especially in the last two-three minutes: we had several good opportunities and really applied some pressure. And out of that pressure came a stunning goal.?
The goal at the 88:33 mark came following a well-played, even contest that saw both teams miss several good chances throughout the game. Keepers Zawislan and Marquette?s Greg Guglielmino each made point-blank saves to preserve the scoreless tie in the second frame and both proved effective at heading off other good opportunities.
However, Zawislan got crossed up on Morehead?s game-winner on an unlucky deflection.
?Joe (Gallo) played a real nice ball back, and I said, ?Okay, here we go?,? Morehead said. ?I hit it and got a lucky nick off of one of the defender?s thighs - which redirected it. That froze the keeper.?
The played started on a rush down the left wing by MU?s Andy Hunter. After his cross into the left side of the box, junior Joe Gallo settled the ball and played it back out of the box to the on-coming Morehead, who took care of the rest of the work. For Morehead, the reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, it was the tenth goal of the season. It was also his fourth game-winner. The assist was Gallo?s first point of the season.
Marquette?s offense proved effective against one of the nation?s stingiest defenses, getting off 11 shots and connecting for only the third goal allowed by the Bluejays all season. Guglielmino made a Marquette career-high seven saves in registering his second shutout of the weekend. It was his fourth of the season.
Marquette is back in action at cross-state rival Wisconsin on Wed., Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. (CT).
