MADISON, Wis. - The Marquette men?s soccer team won its eighth straight game this evening as senior Ryan Taylor?s first goal of the season pushed the Golden Eagles past cross-state rival Wisconsin 2-1 at the Badgers? McClimon Complex. Marquette?s Marshall Morehead opened the scoring for Marquette, continuing his astounding junior season with his 11th goal of the season. With the win, Marquette set a new school record for most consecutive wins and improved to 8-4-0. The Badgers fell to 4-8-1.
?It was a sloppy win, partly because we had a slight letdown after Sunday?s (1-0 win over #12 Creighton) and partly because they dropped in and made it hard for us to play,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?But it?s a win and we?re delighted with it because it was a difficult game.?
After a lackluster opening frame from both teams, Marquette shot out of the blocks in the second half. With Morehead leading the way, the Golden Eagles put the pressure on, forcing Badger keeper Tim Caprez to make eight saves. Morehead and Marquette broke through, however, in the 65th minute, when the junior striker redirected a Jeremiah Bass free kick past Caprez to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
Just minutes later, Taylor netted the game-winner. The senior co-captain headed in a Sean reti corner from eight yards out to give Marquette a two-goal cushion. It was Taylor?s first goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles wound up needing Taylor?s goal when the Badgers pushed up for a late flurry of offensive attacks. Valentine Anozie brought Wisconsin within a goal at the 77:01 mark with a goal that broke Marquette keeper Greg Guglielmino?s 333-minute unscored upon streak. The Badgers had several more opportunities, including two near-misses in the last ten seconds, however Guglielmino broke up several chances, improving to 7-1 on the season and enabling Marquette to hold on to the one-goal victory.
Marquette is back in Conference USA action this Sun., Oct. 10, at UNC Charlotte (3-4-0, 0-3-0). The Golden Eagles and 49ers are slated to get underway at noon (CT).
