SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Marquette women?s soccer team saw its five-game winning streak snapped this afternoon with a 1-0 loss to #1 Santa Clara at the Broncos? Buck Shaw Stadium. All-American Aly Wagner netted the game?s only goal midway through the first half to lift the top-ranked Broncos to their 13th win of the season. Following the loss, Marquette is now 7-5-2.
?We?re obviously disappointed and the players are kind of down because we played the top team in the country so close and lost,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?On the other hand, we?re realistic in knowing that we played so well in losing only 1-0 to the best team in the country.?
Although Santa Clara controlled play for a majority of the game, Marquette closed down the potent Bronco offense. The Golden Eagle defense, led by senior Katie Loughran and juniors Rhegan Hyypio and Heather O?Neil, shut off its end of the field with the help of keeper Mo Bothwell.
?They?re by far the best team we?ve played,? Roeders said. ?They pinned us back and had a lot of possession. But our defense was up to the task. Mo played very well, but never had to make an outstanding save and was in control in front of the net at all times.?
Wagner enabled Santa Clara to win its 23rd straight home game when she scored from ten yards out off a give-and-go with Megan Horvath at the 12:41 mark. Though Santa Clara would go on to out-shoot the Golden Eagles 25-3, Wagner?s shot was the only one to get past Bothwell, who made a season-high nine saves.
?We defended extremely well,? Roeders said. ?We closed things down and hung with them. That gave us some confidence. And the longer it went, the more frustrated (Santa Clara) got.
?We?ve come a long way since the beginning of the season.?
Marquette continues its current six-game road trip and gets back into Conference USA play next Fri., Oct. 15, when the Golden Eagles take on UNC Charlotte at the 49ers Transamerica Field at 6 p.m. (CT).
