TAMPA, Fla. - The Marquette women?s soccer team used a flurry of second-half goals to pick up a key Conference USA victory this afternoon as the Golden Eagles shutout South Florida 5-0. Five Golden Eagles tallied goals to help the Golden Eagles break a two-game losing streak and improve to 8-6-2 and 5-2-1 in C-USA. South Florida, which is just ahead of Marquette in the league standings, falls to 10-5-0, 6-2-0.
?We were against the wind in the first half, and that hindered our game plan,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?And though we were out-playing them, the wind was hurting us. In the second half, we obviously took advantage of it and were able to put some nice sequences together. Needless to say, we wanted this win - needed it really - and we?re thrilled with the outcome.?
After mid-week fears that the game would be canceled due to Hurricane Irene, the teams commenced play under breezy, yet sunny, skies. However, neither team took advantage of the strong winds in the first half, as an evenly-played opening frame ended with no score. Marquette?s Mo Bothwell and South Florida?s Valerie Wetzel made three and four saves, respectively, to keep the game scoreless.
Marquette broke through in the game?s 50th minute, when senior striker Erin Morgan one-timed an Anna Frisk cross into the back of the net to provide the Golden Eagles with the first lead of the day. As it turned out, that was all the Golden Eagles would need to get the ?W?, but they weren?t satisfied with the one-goal cushion.
Morgan?s goal, her sixth of the season, seemed to open the flood gates, as Marquette would tack on four more goals over the final 40 minutes. Katherine Ward netted her fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute, followed by Kelly Roethe, who tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 78th minute. Marquette?s dynamic freshman duo of Kate Gordon and Ashley Spakowitz concluded the scoring with a pair of goals in less than a minute to cap off the 5-0 win.
?We were able to do so many things offensively because our defense was again strong,? Roeders said. ?Overall, it was a total team effort, which I think is indicated in the box score. We got goals from five different players and so many different players made major contributions for us.?
The victory keeps Marquette in the hunt for one of the top spots in the C-USA Tournament.
Marquette starts the stretch drive next weekend when it opens a regular-season-ending, four-game homestand. The Golden eagles host Tulane on Fri., Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. (CT), before welcoming Southern Miss to Milwaukee on Sun., Oct. 24, at 1 p.m.
